Greensoil launches field test of a new PFAS removal Technique

Innovative PFAS Removal Through Foam-Based Soil Treatment

As part of the European LIFE Capture – PFAS project, Greensoil is developing and advancing an innovative method for removing PFAS from contaminated soils using foam-based extraction. This approach offers a sustainable alternative to conventional remediation techniques such as excavation and off-site disposal, while preserving the essential physical and chemical properties of the soil.

From Research to Application: Foam Fractionation

The technology is based on the principle of foam fractionation, a process that takes advantage of the soap-like (surfactant) behaviour of PFAS compounds. When air is introduced into a liquid or slurry, PFAS molecules preferentially attach to air bubbles and are transported to the surface, where they can be removed as foam.

This concept has been demonstrated in earlier research conducted by institutions including the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). These studies showed that foam fractionation can effectively remove PFAS from both water and soil systems.

Building on this scientific foundation, Greensoil has developed its own proprietary configuration that enables foam fractionation to be applied to thicker soil slurries, which are more representative of real-world remediation conditions.

Proven Performance in Soil Remediation

Initial testing of Greensoil’s approach has delivered highly encouraging results:

  • More than 96% PFAS removal from soils originating from multiple contaminated locations
  • A significant reduction in PFAS-containing waste streams, minimizing downstream treatment and disposal requirements
  • Additional optimisation through a second treatment step, in which the foam fraction is further concentrated to reduce waste volumes even more

These results demonstrate both the technical effectiveness and the environmental benefits of the method.

Pilot Installation in Sweden

Following these promising outcomes, Greensoil and project partner Zandwijk RTS have jointly designed and constructed a pilot-scale installation, which is now operational in Sweden. This pilot system allows the technology to be tested under realistic field conditions and provides valuable data for further optimisation and scale-up.

Next Step: Enhancing the Process with Biopolymers

The next phase of development focuses on further improving efficiency and selectivity. Together with our German partner Sensatec GmbH, Greensoil is developing PFAS-binding biopolymers that selectively capture PFAS molecules.

These biopolymers are designed to enhance PFAS removal both:

  • In situ, directly in the contaminated soil, and
  • Within the slurry reactor, where they work in combination with foam fractionation

The integration of foam fractionation with PFAS-selective biopolymers represents a promising pathway toward more efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable PFAS remediation.
